Our Client a Lloyds Insurance Broker/MGA, wishes to appoint a Head of Technology to manage a multi-faceted programme, to provide technology leadership within their business and to drive the implementation of new, strategic IT solutions at the pace and quality the business needs.

The Head of Technology will understand the strategic and operational requirements for the delivery of software systems at the heart of a modern insurance business. Experience of selecting and managing external software development firms, insurance application providers and other IT service companies is essential. The ability to deliver results whilst working under the pressures brought by an ambitious and results-driven management team will be a key personal characteristic. This role will require a strong personality with excellent commercial and communication skills as well as broad technical experience. The Head of Technology will report directly to the Group Chief Executive.

The Role:

The Head of Technology role combines technology vision and leadership, with an assured ability to execute at the pace required by an ambitious insurance business. The scope of the role is to:
work with the Chief Executive and other members of the senior management team to distil business ideas into a strategically consistent IT Program and then be responsible for its delivery;
lead the design of creative insurance systems in response to new business ideas, whilst also challenging business thinking to ensure effective use of IT capability and resources;
work with the business analysis team, to ensure that new systems deliver the information management, reporting and analysis capabilities needed to drive business growth;
design the systems architecture needed to deliver the business vision then specify and select the individual software solutions, packages and services needed to implement it;
work with and manage the software and system suppliers needed to deliver the programme. This will include working with existing suppliers, changing them if necessary and selecting/appointing new suppliers;
oversee the design and implementation of a secure, high-performance, scalable server infrastructure.
Oversight of day-to-day IT operations across all parts of the Company is part of the role. The Head of Technology will provide leadership and set the expected standards in areas such as network and database security and the resolution of business-critical system performance problems when they occur.

Key Responsibilities
Develop and own the delivery of a technology strategy and plan to support the Companys business objectives over the next 12 to 24 months. This will include both the development of new applications and the replacement of legacy applications with the right mix of bespoke and packages applications to deliver the business strategic vision;
Oversee the current project to develop and integrate a central database as a data source to drive future software applications (both bespoke and third party), reporting and analysis services for both in-house teams and external partners;
Manage a mix of contractors, external software developers and IT infrastructure providers to ensure the provision of high quality systems to the business. This may include the recruitment of additional in-house resources for systems development where this is justified;
Manage IT supplier relationship to ensure they deliver maximum value to the business
Put in place the disciplines which will create a system development environment that is focussed on quality and speed of delivery;
Ensure that effective systems and procedures for Database and Application Hosting, Information Security, Disaster Recovery (DR) and business continuity (BusCon) are in place;
Maintain a high-level of awareness of technology innovation and best practice in an insurance business.

Technical Skills and Experience Required

The role demands a strong foundation in both systems and business management skills, with an emphasis on technology leadership. Experience within the insurance sector is desirable but not essential. The Head of Technology must have sufficient experience of the technologies used - or likely to be used - at the business in order to be able to engage in detail, where appropriate, with developers, suppliers and other technology experts. The key skills required are:
Multi-year systems development experience in a senior technology management role;
Track record of designing and delivering IT strategy and systems for high-growth businesses;
Experience of using CRMs and a mix of internal business analysis resources and external suppliers to achieve results. Experience of recruiting and developing a small in-house systems development team;
Understanding of database design, applications, system integration and reporting technologies based on the Microsoft .Net stack;
Experience of the options and technical issues involved in hosting and managing such application in order to ensure performance, redundancy and high-availability
Degree (or equivalent) in computing or a related subject.


Proven IT Project-Management experience in a high-paced, high-pressure environment
Proven ability to lead a team
Fluent Italian
Fluent English
