    Job Title – Data Platform Manager

    The Data Platform Manager forms an integral part of a newly established Data Engineering team and will be responsible for leading a team of developers and data engineers for the build, support, and continuous improvement of company data and reporting solutions. Primarily the purpose of the Data Platform Manager will be to act as a single orchestrator of all engineering activity and overall custodian of the Azure Data Lake platform; for which we are leveraging Data Lake and Blob for data storage, utilising Azure Data Factory for data integration, Databricks for data transformation, and PowerBI for end-user data analytics and reporting.

    This role will encompass a mix of hands-on technical leadership, agile (scrum) management, strategy and ops model development, and stakeholder relations.

     

    The key focus of this role includes:

     

    • Leadership and accountability for an agile multi-functional data factory, including SDLC processes and coding standards
    • Administration of the data platform, including controls, governance access mgmt., deployment schedules, etc. 
    • Responsibility for maintaining the integrity of our data, including meta and master data updates
    • Ownership of the data engineering support and small change/minor enhancement, including testing
    • Oversight and accountability for platform monitoring and issue management
    • Accountable for service performance and data quality

     

    Finally, this role will be required to work closely with the Head of Data Engineering to support the establishment of a new DataOps model – working towards a safe, well controlled, multi-tenancy platform that will enable further progression of the company Data Strategy roadmap.

     

    Job Responsibilities:

     

    • Data Product Delivery: Provide the ownership and co-ordination for development & release activities, maintaining SDLC practices, leveraging a DevOps operating model, and implementing rigorous governance/data quality processes.
    • Team Leadership: Lead a data engineering support and minor enhancements team through both day-to-day data management (BAU) activities and change projects; defining and orchestrating tasks and deliverables in support of the Project Manager and acting as Scrum Master as appropriate.
    • Custodian: Operate as a senior custodian of the company Data Platform, with performance, security, and data integrity at the forefront of all decisions, ensuring that adequate steps are taken to protect data and the data platform.
    • Controls & Standards: Work in collaboration with Data Engineers and Architects and act as a senior contributor on the design, build, and management of the Brit Data Platform; taking direct ownership of controls and standards to ensure that all new data requirements are met using the most appropriate controls and engineering practices, with adherence to SOX requirements.
    • Business Stakeholder Engagement: Establish the necessary governance forums with programme stakeholders (both business and IT) to define and execute against a platform technology roadmap, business change, and data product build plan. Acting as the key co-ordinator of all third-party vendor development activities. Providing full transparency of progress with regular reporting as a key member of the Data Engineering Team.
    • Team Management – Take ownership of the change/minor enhancements and support team and play a leading role in team development while holding team accountable for their commitments, removing roadblocks to their work; leveraging organizational resources to improve capacity for project work; and mentoring and developing team members, and lead recruitment activities when required.

     

    Skills & Qualifications:

     

    • Extensive experience in the field of Azure based data engineering – with proven experience orchestrating and governing data pipelines, integration, data modelling, release mgmt. etc.
    • Extensive experience of data product development (MI/BI) and continuous improvement with proven track record of successfully implementing data projects using both waterfall and agile methodologies, including experience as a Project Manager/Scrum Master managing large, complex projects in a high-tech development environment with multi-function teams
    • Solid hands-on experience with Azure Data Lake (incl. Blob Storage, Delta) Azure Data Factory and Databricks with experience in a Senior Developer/Engineer role with SQL data warehousing, ideally with some exposure to and experience of Python
    • Substantial experience of leading DevOps sprint teams utilising Scrum; translating business requirements into deliverable user stories and defined sprints, with experience acting as a Scrum master; leading daily stand-ups, co-ordinating development activity and monitoring progress.
    • Solid understanding of software development life cycle models and introducing continuous improvement development activities, managing the balance of new product and CI sprints
    • Experience overseeing multi-function project teams with at least 10 team members including Engineers, Developers, Business Analysts, and QA Personnel
    • Highly adept at managing third-party vendors (particularly offshore partners) with daily project delivery initiatives
    • Balanced business/technical background
    • Sufficient level of technical background to provide highly-credible leadership to development teams and to be able to accurately and objectively evaluate complex delivery risks and issues
    • Ability to collaborate with customers and develop strategies and solutions of high business value
    • Strong interpersonal skills including mentoring, coaching, collaborating, and team building
    • Can demonstrate good Stakeholder Management skills at all levels of seniority within the business.
    • Strong analytical, planning, and organizational skills with an ability to manage competing demands
    • Excellent oral and written communications skills and experience interacting with both business and IT individuals at all levels including the executive level
    • Creative approach to problem-solving with the ability to focus on details while maintaining the “big picture” view
