    Role title: Assistant Cyber Underwriter

    Location: London

    Salary: £35k – £40k 


    JOB PURPOSE

    • To provide support to the wider Open Market Cyber Team and act in the best interests of the Company, by delivering underwriting and servicing of existing accounts and portfolios, and evaluating new business accounts and portfolios, as well as new opportunities, by using prudent and established underwriting practices and strategies, within established and feasible underwriting authorities. Underwrites individual insurance applications and portfolios to set guidelines.

    KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES/DELIVERABLES

    1. Deliver the Open Market Cyber Strategy

    • Work collaboratively with other parts of the organization, Third Party Brokers, Business Development Managers, and the Marketing team to develop a strong account and to ensure that they are one of the key markets for Open Market Cyber.
    • Balancing new business, renewal, rating, and adjustment enquiries from your clients. You also deal
    • with claims cover requests, ensuring you align with our service standards.
    • Using proven analytical skills to provide statistics on some of your more difficult cases.
    • Detect and assess risks that are considered both ‘standard’ and ‘non-standard’
    • Enhance the company’s Underwriting’s standing and presence locally by establishing and maintaining strong personal relationships with key stakeholders internally and externally.
    • Take on referrals from other underwriters or cover holders.
    • Liaise with capacity providers on specific cases to deal with such matters as achieving special acceptance and ensure that businesses written fall within their binding authority.
    • Maintain personal knowledge of relevant technical and legal issues and disseminate appropriate information to ensure that cover holders and key brokers are informed of current developments.
    • Ensure that Open Market Cyber underwriting philosophies and appetite levels are understood and followed within the team and amongst brokers.
    • Contribute to the knowledge of the Company by feeding back technical and commercial market intelligence to the appropriate management teams.
    • Ensure excellent service standards at all times.
    • Ensure adequate peer review procedures are adopted and maintained.

    2. Assist and Develop the Open Market Cyber team.

    • Enhance an inclusive, engaged, and motivated team culture to achieve optimum performance.
    • Assist in the development and training of junior members of the team, including the promotion of continuous professional development and advocacy of professional qualifications.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Holding or working towards one of the Chartered Insurance Institute Qualifications: Dip CII/ Advanced Dip CII / ACII essential or educated to “A” level or degree standard.

    Technical Knowledge

    • Knowledge of general insurance products, services, and classes of insurance including underlying legal principles and practices relating to risk within own role capacity desired.
    • Sound understanding of commercial insurance and/or personal insurance lines and/or relevant specialist lines (as appropriate based on the configuration of the branch).
    • Detailed understanding of the methods of rating as applied to our business including the principle of claims triangulations.
    • User of both bespoke in-house IT systems and common external software to gather, and effectively understand the technology required to transact business.

    Experience and Skills

    • Business acumen with experience in roles displaying a wide knowledge of the industry.
    • Can recommend measures to reduce the impact of the market/underwriting cycle on the business
    • area.
    • Knowledge of the limitations of the companies delegated authority and claims handling agreement.
    • Understand the internal underwriting processes and basic factors that affect the performance of an underwriting portfolio and how to monitor risk exposure.
    • Political and presentational skills with an appreciation of the demands of conflicting interests.
    • Business acumen experience in previous roles displaying a wide knowledge of the industry.
    • High level of commercial awareness.
    • Excellent interpersonal skills, including listening, verbal, and written communication with the ability to communicate effectively with all levels of the Company, including senior level management.
    • Strategic mindset with the ability to develop creative approaches and solutions necessary to solve complex problems.
    • Excellent customer service focus, including the ability to manage potentially contentious interactions and the ability to strike a balance between oversight and getting buy-in from the businesses.
    • High degree of ethics and integrity.
    • Ability to interact comfortably with senior team members.
    • MS Office and other relevant IT systems expertise.
